Dental X-Rays

X-rays are invisible waves of energy that allow your dentist to see differences in bone density. The images produced are seen on either film or digital display and are referred to as either radiographs or images. X-rays are one of the most important diagnostic tools in dentistry. Often they provide information about your mouth that would be impossible to detect through any other diagnostic tool. They're an essential part of any thorough oral exam.

Types of radiographs routinely taken

Bitewings - used to help diagnose cavities between teeth. These require patients to bite down on a piece of plastic with an X-ray film in the center.

Periapicals - shows the entire tooth, including the root and surrounding bone. They're useful in diagnosing periodontal disease, abscesses, and impacted teeth, as well as other conditions.

Panoramic - gives a complete view of both jaws on one film. Used as a reference in the extraction of wisdom teeth; also valuable in the diagnosis of abnormal growths.
