- Avoid opening your mouth more than a few
centimeters. Think about opening your jaw in a hinge or arc motion.
- Cut all foods into small, bite-sized pieces;
chew with your back teeth. Try not to bite into anything with your front teeth.
- Avoid eating any
food that requires prolonged chewing.
- Injuries to the
TMJ are quite common and usually resolve in time with rest.
- Stress management techniques are often of great
benefit. Look into counseling; your dentist may also prescribe muscle relaxants.
- Try sleeping on
your back. Avoid falling asleep in a position that might put pressure on your
jaw (ie. on your side). Restful sleep is essential for recovery. The injured
joint(s) and associated muscles can then be given some rest and healing can
occur.
